old Router uses: give it a second life

An old router can continue to serve many other uses that you do not expect. And today, in digi-genius we show you a few examples of it.

An old router can continue to serve many other uses that you do not expect. And today, in digi-genius, we show you a few examples of it.

I bet you have a few old routers hanging around your drawers . The best example is the carrier routers that have been forgotten with portability. Although there are also the free ones that came to our hands for various reasons. Bought, borrowed, or even found.

Right now you are already using a router to have Internet and a WiFi network, but all those routers that you have left over can also be used for other things . You can give your old router a second life, learn a little about how networks work, and make your life a little easier. And all this at little cost, taking advantage of that old router that you have in your drawer.

Extend your Current Wifi Network:

Perhaps the simplest use, and the one that we can get the most out of, is to use the old router as a WiFi repeater . If our WiFi connection does not reach certain parts of our house, or it is very weak, we can make the old router limit itself to extending that signal. And thus have more WiFi network where we need it.

Connect Device, with local wifi network:

We can also create an extra WiFi network, but that is not connected to the Internet. WiFi not only serves to connect to the network of networks, it also works by connecting devices to each other . That is, creating an isolated local network. For example, you could connect two computers or devices wirelessly to transmit information between them.

Or to do with Cable and use the router as a switch:

No, we are not talking about the Nintendo console . We are talking about the devices that allow several computers to be interconnected through cables  Ethernet  . It is the same as before, only that we stopped WiFi networks. We will use the ports  Ethernet  that the router has, which are usually four in most routers.

Create Wifi network, away from home:

You travel a lot? Do you always piggyback on your phones and computers? Carrying a WiFi router with them can be a good idea. For example, you can plug it in when you arrive at the hotel. The configuration will already be saved in your devices, and you can plug in an ethernet with the Internet to connect through that WiFi network.

You want to play a computer game with your friends, but you want to do it in the same room. No Internet and remoteness. You can use those old routers to connect all the computers and set up a local network. So you can play without interruptions and together, a 'LAN Party' with all the laws.

Experiment with router, without fear of breaking it:

There are many alternative operating systems for routers. OpenWRT , Tomato , DD-WRT or LEDE are some of them. And they offer us to extend the possibilities of a router . If you have an old one and it is compatible, why not experiment with installing one of them?

How do i do all this with my old router?

These are all ideas, but we haven't told you how to do any of them. The reason is that there are hundreds of routers on the market , each with a unique configuration. Not to mention that the operators also customize and fiddle with the router's firmware to their liking.

The first thing you have to do is find out the model of your router: it should appear on the label where the technical data comes from. Once you have it, Google that model next to what you want to do . Most likely, someone has already tried what you want to do, and has documented it on the Internet.

In any case, we remind you that everything you do with your router is your responsibility. Don't be afraid to dive in, but be careful not to touch anything you shouldn't. Read the tutorials twice carefully, and if you don't understand a step, make sure you understand it before continuing.
